Consumers could find that their energy bills are not as expensive if they take up green home improvements and waste less energy, according to the energy secretary
Responding to the news that ScottishPower will increase its energy tariffs for the second time in just nine months, he said the announcement “underlines why the government is building an escape route from a high fossil fuel future”.
“The Green Deal will help householders upgrade their homes to waste less energy, and our electricity market reforms will bring on investment in clean energy sources that are not vulnerable to global price shocks.”
“We need to get off the oil price hook and on to clean, green growth,” he added.
Customers of the utility firm will find from August 1st that electricity tariffs go up 19 per cent, while gas will increase ten per cent, a rise that could be echoed by other providers.
